PLANT LETTERS – A citizen science project of the Centre for Functional Ecology – Science for People & the Planet and UNESCO Chair in Biodiversity and Conservation for Sustainable Development, coordinated by the researcher from the Centre for Functional Ecology – Science for People & the Planet António Gouveia.

The PLANT LETTERS website reveals all the details of the exchanges of correspondence between botanists at the University of Coimbra (UC) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The platform, which has been online since last week, contains taxonomic and geographic information of potential importance for the definition of strategies for the promotion and conservation of biodiversity in Portugal and several Portuguese-speaking countries, was launched by the UC with the contribution of more than a thousand scientists- citizens, who collaborated in the transcription of the letters.
The citizen science project helped to extract and organize information from more than 1300 documents that have already been digitized, in a work that can give rise to new investigations.
